More simple ideas for gifts that won’t make your pocket book scream.  These hair accessories are easy, glam, and perfect for the holiday season.  Who wouldn’t want a dash of spring in the middle of winter? How about  making them in BLACK with black glitter?  That would surely be a show stopper.

Oldies But Goodies

letter-embellishments

As you know, each week we do our best to bring you a new craft or DIY project.  Each week means four projects a month, 48 a year and well, you get the idea.  That’s a lot of inspiration and ideas!  That being said, we’ve got a lot of great projects that perhaps you haven’t seen before.  Here are just a few, but don’t hesitate to take a peak through our archives and see what you can find.

Baby Name Art Canvas How-To

We love this project because there are so many ways to personalize it.  You don’t necessarily have to spell a name, how about a word or phrase that you especially like?

The Urban Corsage Project

A couple years ago, Mark Montano hosted a celebrity crafting event at the Sundance Film Festival.  Guests were invited to make these adorable flower corsages among other great crafts.

Acorn Magnets

These magnets are too cute not to try with your little ones.  Little pine cones could work, too!

Custom Headboard

There are so many different ways to create a custom headboard, so we’ve found great budget friendly options we know you’ll love.

Simple DIY Halloween Decorations

Spooky_Family_Chandelier_close_up_lg

We’re just days away from Halloween, can you believe it? By now we’re hoping the costumes are in order and all you have left to do is turn on the fog machine and fill your home with ghosts, goblins and creepy crawlies.

So perhaps you’re not looking to transform the entire house, but rather just a few decorations to set the mood.  If so, here are some quick, easy and perfectly spooky projects.

Creepy Family Chandelier

What you need:

old family photos
self-adhesive googly eyes (assorted sizes and colors)
black ribbon
dried twigs
black foam board
hole punch
scissors
Amazing GOOP
lighter

Steps:

1. Make black-and-white copies of family photos; old photos work best. Make two copies of each photo you’d like to use. If desired, carefully burn edges of photos with a lighter for an extra creepy effect.

2. Cut foam board so it is slightly larger than photos. Glue one photo to each side of the foam board to create a dual-sided frame. Add googly eyes to family members, alternating the eye size and color.

3. Punch a hole in the top of foam board frame, insert black ribbon and suspend spooky family photos at varying heights from the chandelier.

Halloween Skull Wreath

What you need:

wreath covered with silk foliage
flat black spray paint
orange and black glass Christmas balls
plastic skulls
Amazing GOOP
black ribbon

Steps:

1. Spray foliage wreath with black spray paint. Try to cover all of the greenery or flowers with spray paint so no other colors show. This may take several coats.

2. Attach skulls to the wreath with Amazing GOOP, spacing them evenly. Fill in with black and orange glass balls, attaching them with GOOP or tying them on with black ribbon.

Dress Up Home Decor With a Fall Wreath

The leaves have just started changing color out here in the Northwest and I’m sipping on warm apple cider, a sure sign that fall has arrived.  I’m not one to go over board on seasonal decorations, but I wanted to add a little something fall-ish to my home so I decided to make my own wreath.  This is an incredibly easy craft and would be a great gift.

What you need:
A wreath. I chose a branch wreath, but foam would work as well.
Artificial leaves and any other decorations you want in the wreath.
Amazing GOOP Craft Adhesive

First, I loosely arranged the leaves on the wreath to see how many I would need and the best placement.  I wanted the branches to show on the sides, so you’ll notice that I didn’t cover the entire wreath.

Then, I applied a small dab of Amazing GOOP Craft adhesive to the bottom of each leaf and placed it back on the wreath.

Once I had covered the wreath with the first layer of leaves, I cut leaves from the garland and placed those within the others to add some dimension.

Set the wreath in a safe place for about 24 hours and allow the adhesive to fully dry.  Then, it’s ready to hang or set on a table as part of a centerpiece!

Brighten A Room With A Mosaic Mirror Table

Another great project from our friend, Mark Montano.  Here he takes an old table and transforms it into a fun piece that could be used as a decorative side table or mini kitchen table.  And, we love  that all the tiny mirrors will reflect light and help brighten up a dark room.

If this sounds like a project for you, pick up some E-6000 at a Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Jo-Ann’s or Hancock Fabrics near you or buy online with code E6BGTW for buy-one-get-one free (2 oz. E-6000 Craft, limit 3).  If you haven’t checked out Mark’s newest book, Big Ass Book of Crafts, head on over to his blog and enter his book giveaway.

Yes, we’ve all seen mosaic before, but I love this twist on what to use for it.  When I was making this I kept having to run back to the craft store to pick up more mirrors so be warned!  Figure out your space and about how many you’ll be needing before you head out.  The other great thing about this table….You can see up your nose while you’re eating!  Enjoy.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • Enough round mirrors to cover your table top.  Michaels Arts and Craft Stores has a very nice assortment of round mirrors at a very good price.
  • E-6000 or Household GOOP Adhesive
  • Krylon 18K Premium Gold Plate Metallic paint.  (I have tried many gold paints, Krylon makes the best Metallic paints hands down)
  • Bathroom tile grout
  • Sandpaper
  • Spackle Knife
  • Sponge
  • Bucket of Cold Water
  • A table that you want to cover.  Mine was a 30” diameter table top and it took about 800 round mirror tiles that ranged in size from 3/8” to 1”.  HINT:  Check out 2nd hand stores and furniture outlets for simple, inexpensive tables that you can use for these projects.

HERE’S HOW:

STEP 1:  Sand your table top surface.  This will make a nice rough surface which will make your glue stick much better.

STEP 2:  Glue on your tile mirrors with the GOOP Craft glue.  Do it randomly making sure to leave just about 1/8” inch in between each round tile.

STEP 3:  Once the tiles are dry (I like to leave things overnight) spread your grout with your spackle knife making sure to get grout in between each tile.  Get in on there anyway you can!

STEP 4: Wet your sponge with cold water, ring it out and smooth the grout in between the tiles while at the same time wiping off the mirrors.

NOTE:  Your mirrors will have a grout residue but don’t worry about that, you can clean them off when the grout is dry.  Also, don’t worry if you don’t get grout in every spot right  away, you can always go over it a second time to get the spots you missed.

STEP 5:  Let grout dry.

STEP 6:  Tape off the top of the table and spray paint your base.  You can choose any color that you like, I used gold on this table.

Quick Pillow Project with Big Impact

Not too long ago we shared with you the lace pillow, one of Mark Montano’s projects from his new book, The Big Ass Book of Home Decor, using E-6000 Craft adhesive.  Here’s a clip of Mark sharing some tips for making a big impact for not a lot of money, including the lace pillow!

E-6000 featured on The Today Show

Designer and environmental lifestyle expert, Danny Seo, recently stopped by The Today Show to share with Hoda and Kathie Lee how to upcycle trash into treasure using E-6000.  In the segment, you can view here, Danny demonstrates how to take your mismatched plates and turn them into tiered trays that can be used for entertaining and parties.  As Danny explains, E-6000′s industrial strength glue only bonds to materials like ceramic, glass and metal making it perfect for this project.

E-6000 can be found at Wal-Mart and online.

A Little Glue, A Little Lace, A Perfect Pillow

Our friend, Mark Montano, just released his new book, The Big Ass Book of Home Decor. And in his own words at a recent interview, “About 90% of my projects use either E-6000 or Amazing GOOP.”

One of those projects is this lace applique pillow. Mark is showing off this pillow this week in media interviews on radio and TV around the country as part of the launch of the new book. But you can see it here!

Want to make your own? Pick up some E-6000 at a Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Jo-Ann’s or Hancock Fabrics near you or buy online with code E6BGTW for buy-one-get-one free (2 oz. E-6000 Craft, limit 3).

I’m always looking for a good way to cover up a stain on a pillow. I finally found one. OK, I’m only half kidding! I just like gluing fabrics together because the bond is just amazing! I found this lace last year at a fabric store and thought that I could (like most lace) cut it apart and use the flowers separately to embellish something. Cut to a year later and I sat down to make this pillow in two of my favorite decorating colors, brown and yellow.

Any lace will do for a project like this and if you’re really adventurous, try doing it all over an old chair that needs some sprucing up. I think you might really like the results.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • E-6000 or Household Goop Glue (same company, great products)!
  • 1 yard lace that you like that you can cut apart
  • Pillow that you want to cover
  • Scissors
  • Fray Check (optional depending on the lace)
  • Straight pins

HERE’S HOW:

  1. Cut your lace apart to separate the flowers and leaves
  2. If there is a rough edge or an edge that you think my fray, use Fray Check on it.
  3. Carefully remove the stuffing from your pillow (or if you’re making a pillow, do this before you start stuffing it)
  4. Lay your pillow flat and start arranging how you want your lace flowers.
  5. Pin your lace pieces in place
  6. Start gluing them until you’re satisfied.
  7. Stuff your pillow and sew the hole closed and you’re done!
