Create a Charming DIY Shadow Box

cw April 048

It’s no secret that art is expensive yet we all want something beautiful to adorn the walls  of our home. Crafting is not only an affordable way to create art on a budget, it’s also a great way to personalize decor to your individual tastes.

We’re happy to share this project from Craft Warehouse for creating DIY Shadow Box art using a few basic craft supplies and E-6000. It’s an inexpensive project you can complete in less then an hour with long-lasting results you’re sure to cherish.

What you’ll need:

  • 12×12 Black Shadow Box
  • 5×5 black frame
  • Scrap book paper of your choice
  • A key (antique or a craft store purchase)
  • A large section of Burlap
  • E-6000
  • Double-sided tape

Easy steps:

  1. Remove glass from 5×5 frame and set aside.
  2. Cut scrap book paper to fit the 5×5 frame.
  3. Glue the key to the center of the scrap book paper and assemble the 5×5 frame (Do not use the glass front).
  4. Cut burlap to 14×14 to fit the back of the shadow box frame.
  5. Wrap burlap around the backing and adhere using double-sided tape.
  6. Place the 5×5 frame in the middle of the covered burlap and adhere using E-6000 glue. Allow to dry up to 24 hours.
  7. After the glue has dried, put the back on the shadow box to complete your framed art.

Repair, Don’t Replace: Broken Chair Legs

690085_46134023

If you’ve ever checked out the curb on trash day, you have probably noticed how common it is to see broken wooden chairs awaiting their one-way trip to the local landfill. Too often, wooden chairs are thrown out when all they need is a quick fix. If you have a wooden chair with a broken leg, don’t replace it– learn how to repair it with EcoGlue Premium Wood Adhesive.

Loose Legs

Using chairs frequently can cause legs to become loose. It also happens over time because as wood ages and dries out, it shrinks. As a result, the joints between the parts of a chair can sometimes come loose. This problem can be repaired by forcing glue into the joints. It’s important to choose a high-performance wood glue such as EcoGlue Premium Wood adhesive that will form a strong bond and maintain flex strength, heat resistance and adhesive strength over time. Instead of replacing your favorite chair, follow these steps to repair a chair with loose legs:

  1. Examine joints to find any loose ones. Repair all joints at the same time.
  2. Separate each joint as much as possible to make it easily accessible.
  3. Clean off old glue from the ends of the chair legs and from the inside of the holes. (Use a scraper, chisel or knife if necessary.) Make sure to remove all old glue, because the new glue will not stick to it.
  4. Apply EcoGlue Premium Wood adhesive to both the tenon (the end of the leg or stretcher) and to the inside of the hole.
  5. Reassemble the parts using a rubber mallet or clamp if necessary.
  6. Hold the joint together, and drill a hole from the underside, slightly smaller in diameter than your wood screw at an angle to the joint.
  7. Drive in a screw longer than the diameter of the tenon part you are repairing. The screw will hold the joint until EcoGlue Premium Wood glue dries (initial bond forms in 30 minutes, 100% strength is reached in 24 hours) and prevent it from becoming loose again.

Check out this post from TLC for instructions to repair broken back rails, spindles, slats and other structural parts.

    DIY Dr. Seuss Nursery Mobile

    mobile cat

March 2 marks the birth date of beloved children’s author, Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known by the pen name, Dr. Seuss. For more than 50 years, the works of Dr. Seuss have been an inspiration to children and adults of all ages.

To celebrate, we came up with a Cat in the Hat inspired nursery mobile to pass along the wonder of Dr. Seuss to a new generation. The mobile is easy to construct, and the brightly colored decorative elements make this a unique addition to any nursery.

    What you’ll need:

    • 2 embroidery hoops (approximately 16”, bigger or smaller depending on desired size of mobile)
    • 6-8 shadowbox frame ornaments or wooden cutouts
    • 10 yards of 3/8″ red ribbon
    • 1 package assorted blue buttons
    • red self adhesive rhinestones
    • blue and white striped paper and bright red paper
    • Cat in the Hat handmade art or printables
    • Amazing EcoGlue craft adhesive
    • paint, if desired
    • 1 large keyring

    Easy Instructions:
    (Frame)

    1. Remove the outer hoop (with the screws) from the embroidery hoops. Use only the inner hoop, without the screws
    2. Paint the hoop blue, if desired
    3. Cut a piece of ribbon to approximately 18″
    4. Attach ribbon to the embroidery hoop, run the ribbon up to the keyring, and back down to the opposite side of the hoop
    5. Cut a piece of ribbon to approximately 9″
    6. Attach to embroidery hoop, run the ribbon up to the keyring and tie together with the first ribbon. Space the ribbon apart to balance the hoop and create the mobile hanger

    (Decorative Elements)

    1. Prepare shadowbox frame ornaments or wooden cutouts by drilling a hole in the top, large enough to thread the ribbon
    2. Using non toxic Amazing EcoGlue craft adhesive, decorate the shadowboxes or cutouts by gluing striped paper to the front and back
    3. Center a small cutout of Cat in the Hat illustrations in each shadowbox
    4. Decorate with buttons, rhinestones or other embellishments
    5. Allow glue to dry
    6. Thread ribbon through each item at desired length and tie to embroidery hoop
    7. Evenly space each item around the hoop

Note: Child safety is of utmost importance in your mobile project. Make sure your little one cannot reach the mobile so s/he can’t become entangled or pull anything off. This mobile should be used for decorative purposes only.
